Los Gatos Youth Theatre (LGYT) was founded in June of 2009, by Blossom Hill teacher, Brian Houg and Randi Chen, a local parent, along with a handful of community leaders. The purpose of the organization is to give children in Los Gatos and the surrounding communities an opportunity to participate in local theatre, through multiple shows and workshops. LGYT serves school aged kids 6-18 in a safe, real-life theatre environment.
The first production was Willy Wonka, Jr, performed in August 2009 with a cast of 37 kids. In the summer of 2010, LGYT produced two plays, Aristocats, Kids for the younger ages (7-10 years) and Guys and Dolls, Jr, for older children (10-13), and grew to over 60 participating kids. LGYT continued to perform two full-scale productions each summer, the Reprise show for ages 8-14 years and the Encore show for ages 14-18 years. For our 10th Anniversary season in 2019, we have added an additional production, the Prelude show for younger actors (ages 7-10).
In 2013 LGYT added theatre day camps to the summer line up. The various Performance and Workshop day camps help actors hone their skills in acting, dancing and vocal skills, with the Performance camps culminating in a show for friends and family. These are shorter and less elaborate than the full-scale Encore, Reprise and Prelude productions, but make no mistake– they are full productions including sets, costumes, and makeup– and even include mics with sound and lighting engineers! Our day camps now serve over 600 kids and are a cornerstone of many families’ summer plans.
In 2018 our high school Encore production was The Drowsy Chaperone and our 4th-8th grade Reprise production was Bye Bye Birdie, both performed in mid July at Leigh High School to thunderous applause! Both shows had sold out audiences and provided an opportunity for the local community to see affordable, top-notch theatre right in their back yard.
The Performance camps presented Aladdin Kids and High School Musical 2 Jr. in June, and The Big Bad Musical and Jack & the Beanstalk in July, all at Blossom Hill Elementary School. Workshop camps were focused on classic and contemporary Broadway as well as auditioning skills. Workshops feature a more loose, playful environment for those kids looking to dip their toes into the performing arts for just a week or two of their summer.
LGYT is humbled by the support and love of Los Gatos and surrounding communities. We are a non-profit and are dependent upon not only financial support of our communities and families, but also the endless volunteer hours given to pull off shows of this magnitude. We welcome any and all support– and encourage local businesses to consider participating in our sponsorship opportunities.
